Woodmansey Village Hall

The "clubhouse" Woodmansey Village Hall is where we meet every month

This is where we meet:

East Riding Astronomers wanted to meet where it was easy to get to, offered the chance of dark skies and which could be used during bad weather.

The most convenient place found to date is in the Village Hall in Woodmansey.

Certainly there are such creature comforts as cups of tea, toilets and a room large enough to host talks, presentations and "show and tell" sessions when fellow astronomers demonstrate some of the many telescopes available.

Ample parking is available and when the night sky is clear then the field outside is more than adequate for observing and it is surprisingly dark.

Light Pollution

Poorly designed and installed lighting can have a significant impact on local light pollution as shown in this image. Often the owners of the lighting are willing to take steps to minimise the impact provided the measures are not too costly. The example shown in the image below is illumination for a car park left on after the business has closed. Not only does this cause light pollution but it is also a waste of energy, two good reasons for switching off after the car park is locked up for the night.

Light pollution under certiain circumstances is considered a statutory nuisance.

We are in discussions with the local businesses to the south of the Village Hall to mitigate the effects of their lighting. As the Village Hall car park is flood lit the Hall Committee have fitted a convenient switch to allow these lights to be turned off easily plunging the site into darkness apart from three small emergency lights. (see below).
