Astronomy Up Close

Astronomy Up Close : Beverley Treasure House (corner of Champney Road and Princes Gardens)

Thursday 1 December 2pm to 7pm - A successful and enjoyable event with between 35 and 40 visitors.

We started at 2pm, setting up a few telescopes outside the entrance to the Library/Treasure House, and 1 telescope inside.

We had visitors at the very start (2pm) and throughout the rest of the day, with the occasional rush. Several visitors brought along problem telescopes that on the whole we were able to help with, and several visitors are keen to become members.

While it didn't rain during the event, the promised break in the clouds didn't happen and there was no opportunity to observe the Moon or Jupiter as it got dark.

The Club members on hand to help out were Sue Rose, Phil Davies and committee members Lorraine (Chair), Phil (Secretary), Mark (Observing Manager), Chris (Hub Manager) and Lee (Welcome Officer).

We had a range of telescopes to view: 150mm Newtonian reflector, 200mm Newise modified Newtonian, 127mm Maksutov Cassegrain, 200mm modified Dobsonian and a 80mm triplet refractor.

The Tower Solar System display was popular with visitors until it closed at 4:30. A late evening rush of interest resulted in the event going onto 6:45 and the last of us leaving the site at 7pm.

The event was so successful that we would like to do this again, perhaps as a regular annual event.

Thanks to Sally from the Treasure House for inviting us and helping to organise the event.
