Beverley Library and Treasure House Exhibition

June 2022 to January 2023

This webpage supported the exhibition on astronomy by ERA at Beverley's Treasure House That ran from late June 2022 until the end of January 2023. We had limited space on our display boards and the contents of this webpage bring you more content for each board as well as links to additional information.

Didn't visit the exhibition? Then you didn't climb the solar system starcase or travel faster than the speed of light from the Sun to Neptune.

Perhaps we will do something like this again.

In the meantime why not seek out a local astronomy club and find out more about stargazing?

What's Up?

During July to December, as the nights get darker, there are so many things to see in the night sky that you will need a plan. Let us help guide you around East Yorkshire's night sky.

Astrophotography

A number of our members are quite good at this. Check out our members gallery.

Fun facts for all the family. Just a few to get you started as we have an entire universe of facts to explore.
If we shrunk the universe down so that our sun was the size of a small garden pea then the solar system would just fit into the Treasure House Tower.

Come and explore the solar system and imagine as you walk up the Tower steps that your spaceship is blasting its way out of the sun's gravity well, gradually spiralling out to the darker outer edge of our solar system.

York Solar System Cycle Route.

If you want to get into astrophotography then be aware that it is a significant learning journey and it will require time, patience and some financial investment.

There are many fine astrophotographers out there and it's never been easier to get involved, but it's not for everyone though. Come along to a club meeting and chat with some of our members to see if it's for you.

Equipment on display at the Treasure House:

We have a tabletop dobsonian reflector telescope that despite its small size and relative low cost is actually a good telescope.

We also have on display a larger refractor telescope, a solar filter, eyepieces, binoculars and some items that can be found in the basic toolkit for every astronomer.

The most basic starting kit is made up of a simple guide to the night sky, your eyes, and someone to share the experience with.

Everything else is optional.
