2024 Meeting Dates

Some notes on recent meetings

In 2024 we have had several monthly meetings were it was not possible to engage in skywatching due to a very bad run of luck with the weather.

However, this has given us an opportunity to view more old Sky at Night programmes and to network/talk amongst ourselves, which is worthwhile.

Our last meeting was the 2024 Annual General Meeting on Monday 6th May 2024.

For more details on that meeting follow the above link.

October and November 2023 meetings

Both meetings suffered from cloud cover although a little observing was possible in November. Both meetings saw lots of discussions amongst members and guests, we also viewed old episodes of the Sky at Night, and at the November meeting we held a telescope builders and repair workshop.

September 2023

Another successful meeting. After a few items of Club business including the September night sky and proposals for a visit to Jodrell Bank, a September lunar observing session and October meteor party(ies), The 18 Club members went outside for a few hours of observing including the Owl Cluster, Albireo, Saturn, Jupiter, the waning moon and a few DSOs.

Members set up their equipment before the meeting started at 7:30, some members stayed on until near midnight.

August 2023

Our first meeting after the summer "break" was a success. Almost 20 attended the meeting at the Hall. We had a slide show of old astrophotographs taken on film by Tony Scaife, delivered by our Chair Chris. Although the night was light until 10 most stayed until we could see some stars at least, and a few stayed until we observed Andromeda and Saturn through the TS20 (around 2300hrs). Just a few more days to go before the meteor party.

Start of our meeting and awaiting astronomical darkness.

1st May (AGM) 2023

A well attended AGM with 20 members present. Some changes to elected officers saw Lorraine step down after 9 years of leading the Club and Chris take on the mantle of Chair, Lorraine moved on to Welcome Officer and Lee moved from that position to Hub Manager.

The positions of Secretary (Phil), Treasurer (Helen) and Observing Manager (Mark) remained unchanged. Terry retains the position of Catering Manager.

A number of proposals for summer events are in motion, namely:

A meteor party on August 12th, 13th or 14th (weather dependent) for the Perseids.

Lunar and solar observing sessions to be arranged during June.

A Market Stall in Beverley on 29th July

A possibe trip to the National Space Centre or Jodrell Bank.

For more information keep tuned to the Whats App group or contact the Secretary by email.

3rd April 2023

Another excellent observing night. Not to sure how many members turned out, we were all outside observing and the TS20 scope was put to great use observing the almost full moon with the new polarising filter fitted.

6th March 2023

No observing this month due to cloud cover. Chris gave a talk on the history and application of astrophotogtraphy. Lee gave a demonstration of the new levelling platform for the TS20 telescope and members tried their balance on the "stepladder" to reach the eyepiece on a Zenith pointing TS20 scope.

Lots of opportunities for discussion, equipment checks, raffle and hot beverages.

Monday 6th February 2023

Very well attended meeting with lots of scopes in evidence. Light cloud and a bright moon did not spoil our observing. The local garden centre lights are now off from 6pm so observing is better than it has been. The Club TS20 was much in use by members observing a variety of targets until around 9:45. Jupiter and 3 of the 4 Galilean moons, Mars, the waxing Moon, Orion Nebula. But first in our sights was the comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) observed by many members through the 20" TS20 scope.

Normal club business was suspended so we could observe more, but we still managed a raffle and hot drinks.

Here are a few photos from the night, courtesy of Club members Tessa and Mark.

Lee Cooper sets up the TS20

A bright waxing moon was a glorious sight.

The sky glow from Hull is not as bright as this low light image would suggest.

Almost all the Club members managed the climb up to see near zenith objects such as the comet.

Monday 2nd January 2023

Around 15 members attended the 1st meeting of 2023 and were rewarded by a clear albeit slightly murky sky. Six members brought their own scopes and the Club TS20 was much in use by members observing a variety of targets until around 9:45. Jupiter and 3 of the 4 Galilean moons, Mars, the waxing Moon, Orion Nebula. A satellite was observed tracking across the moon. Normal club business was suspended so we could observe more, but we still managed a raffle and hot drinks.

Monday 7th November 2022

A well attended meeting. It was a cloudy night so we had our usual raffle and hot drinks, and discussed a number of issues. We had a lights out session to look at the impact of recent improvements to the car parking lighting.

All the members and guests are dressed to stay warm outside should the sky clear.

Monday 5th September. Well attended (20+) meeting that wasn't dampened by the thunderstorm around 7pm. Several new members and returning members. Phil and Lee delivered an informal talk on collimation of Newtonian telescopes and help a few members with equipment problems.

1st August 2022 - Woodmansey Village Hall. It will be light for a while, the ideal time to bring along any telescopes for a Q&A or problem solving clinic.

Sunday 3rd July Woodmansey Village Hall hosted a Gala (2pm to 8pm) and the East Riding Astronomers were there.

June 2022- no Club meeting as such but we launched our Treasure House Exhibition at the end of June.

23rd May - Annual General Meeting was held and attended by 14 members, club officers were elected, accounts and reports presented and various telescopes viewed. The TS20 telescope was officially commissioned. See this report.

On the 2nd of May there was a small meeting at the ERA Hub at Woodmansey Village Hall, and also a small meeting on Zoom by other members.

4th April 2022 - see this report

7th March 2022 - no report.

7th February 2022. A very well attended meeting (20+) and while the skies did not clear until later in the evening, we had a great presentation on astrophotography, and several members brough equipment along for "investigation".

3rd January 2022 (subs due) No report Visitors are welcome to all our meetings (there is a £3 meeting charge for non members)
